Standing Up to State Farm: MGW’s Battle for Fair Insurance Practices in Wisconsin
On April 19, 2023, a severe hailstorm struck Washington County, causing extensive property damage for many residents. In the aftermath, Wisconsin homeowners are increasingly finding themselves in a frustrating battle against unjustly denied claims by State Farm, especially concerning hail damage.
“Since 2020, I have sued State Farm over residential roof claims more than 50 times—probably closer to 75,” said Ryan Graff of MGW Law. “All other carriers combined wouldn’t equal that number.”
MGW Law is now representing several affected homeowners. Ryan Graff spoke with Jenna Sachs at Fox 6 News to discuss this growing issue.
The lawsuit highlights a disconnect between what State Farm’s policy states it covers for hail damage and how it trains its staff to identify it. According to the suit, State Farm is “wrongfully and improperly using a standard definition of hail damage to asphalt shingles that is not found anywhere in the policy.”
“And, we’re not going to recognize pure granular loss as hail damage covered by the policy,” Graff explained. “Some carriers do it infrequently. State Farm does it constantly.”
Insurance companies that deny valid claims or delay payments betray the trust policyholders place in them. This betrayal not only impacts the financial stability of homeowners but also erodes trust in the entire insurance system.
